A Tribute to Everyday Heroes: A Mother's Fight against Leukemia
Our team is excited to have Lynda Flores share her story this month about overcoming odds after losing her child Dezma to leukemia earlier this year. She is waging war against the disease...
Here's her story:
First I would like to thank Wonderful Windows and Siding for the opportunity to talk about leukemia, a blood cancer. The sudden diagnosis of cancer hits a household like a tornado, as it did mine January 15, 2012.
After a long 14 month battle, Dezma passed on March 5, 2013 at the age of 11 from Acute Myeloid Leukemia. I truly appreciate the opportunity to spread awareness of the disease (particularly in children), the signs and symptoms and how YOU can get involved.
Leukemia – an uncontrolled accumulation of blood cells. Basically one blood cell multiplies itself over and over and begins to crowd your blood stream. The cause of leukemia is still unknown.
There is no way it can be prevented nor can it be detected early. It is important for you to remain aware of the signs and symptoms of leukemia. Easy bruising, paleness, and fatigue are all signs that something is not right. One might even feel achy and have a shortness of breath. If you are noticing these symptoms and home treatment is not working, get to an emergency room immediately.
Every 4 minutes someone is diagnosed with a blood cancer and every 10 minutes someone in the US dies from a blood cancer. It is the #3 cancer killer in North America. Hispanic children have the highest rate of diagnosis.
As you can see, there are very few facts I can provide to you on what causes and how you can prevent this from happening to your family. The only way we can begin to find causes, work on prevention and most importantly CURES, is through research.
My daughter was strong enough to receive her next treatment; there just was no other treatment available for her to try.
Dezma would have turned 12 years old on August 8th.

In her child's honor, Lynda Flores has committed to run a half marathon alongside The Leukemia &Lymphoma Society | Team in Training.
Forty runners across Texas (Go Team Dezma!) have rallied and are training alongside her family to help fundraise and reach a financial goal of $100,000 in order to link her daughter Dezma’s name to a research program for Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

A very touching story that I read. There's a saying mother's knows best! and I do believe in that saying. We should love our parents like they did to us. We should took care of them as much as we can because time will come they will gone and we will miss there tending care and love.
